Yukiko Kubo Shiogi, an American betrayed by her own nation, endured her family’s imprisonment during the darkest days of World War II. She lost her freedom and a cherished right of passage, but she never lost faith in her nation or herself.
With Honors Denied follows Yuki’s 60-year journey from persecution to redemption, and weaves a heartwarming, true-life tale of a broken promise, a lifelong regret, and a dream finally fulfilled.
The non-fiction film was shot in the Seattle area during the spring of 2002. Writing and post-production were completed in February 2003. With Honors Denied made its premiere at the Maui Film Festival on June 12, 2003, as the festival’s opening short film. With Honors Denied is narrated by George Takei, best known for his role as Mr. Sulu in the Star Trek television and film series. The successful actor, author and activist spent much of his childhood behind barbed wire at Japanese American internment camps in the swamps of Arkansas and wind-swept northern California.
